HPE chief AI officer on the line between AI and automation

A key goal for many senior technology leaders in the AI-driven world is to make technology work. Figuring out how AI fits into your organization’s operations can include deciding what AI means for a business.

“At the end of the day, we’re trying to automate things that a human would normally do. That’s the same thing with the car, right? I mean, would you call the autonomous car AI or sophisticated automation?” asked Bob Friday, chief AI officer at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).

Friday recently sat down at NRF 2026: Retail’s Big Show to share a little about how HPE is using AI and how it has leveraged the technology as it has evolved.

HPE offers networking, server and container software and services. Friday was a co-founder of Mist Systems, an AI-powered wireless LAN startup that was acquired by Juniper Networks, which was in turn acquired by HPE.
