HPE has introduced a new program called TimeLess for GreenLake Alletra MP block storage users, which provides non-disruptive driver updates. This program is similar to Pure Storage’s Evergreen Leaves program for its FlashArray and FlashBlade all-flash array customers, offering uninterrupted hardware and driver software updates for the life of the program.
HPE aims to enhance the storage ownership experience with new investment protection and a seamless infrastructure lifecycle. The Alletra MP Storage is a multi-controller and multi-protocol system that includes the alletra 6000 and 9000 Block storage arrays. Customers who choose block storage on HPE Alletra MP and participate in the TimeLess program will qualify for an upgrade to a next-generation controller without interruption when they renew their subscription.
This allows customers to manage hardware and software updates directly and avoid a major upgrade, resulting in an average 30 percent total cost of ownership savings for storage. The program also includes the HPE 100 Percent Data Availability Guarantee and HPE StoreMore data efficiency guarantees. However, the program is not available to other Alletra block storage users, Alletra MP OEM VAST data files users, or users of other HPE storage products such as SimpliVity HCI.
The controller hardware and operating systems on an array must have multiple controllers and recovery and failover enabled by the operating system for a seamless upgrade to occur. Last month, IBM announced its Storage Guarantee Scheme for upgrading NVMe-SSD-based FlashSystem array hardware and software over the life of a system, covering hardware and software upgrades with service level agreements and fixed-price contracts.
HPE’s TimeLess program is scheduled to be available in the third quarter of 2024, offering a “future-proof investment that never goes out of style.” With IBM and HPE following Pure Storage’s lead, it is apparent that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery in the industry.
