Hewlett Packard Company (HPE) has revealed plans to construct a new supercomputer powered by NVIDIA for the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan. The supercomputer, named ABCI 3.0, will be available as a cloud service for both public and private organizations to support large AI models and enhance research, development, and innovation efforts.

ABCI 3.0 will utilize HPE Cray XD systems with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs and Quantum-2 InfiniBand networks to address the increasing demand for computational resources in the field of AI. It is expected to deliver 6.2 exaflops of half-precision performance, making it Japan’s fastest AI supercomputer and a valuable asset for supporting the country’s growing AI workload requirements.

AIST has been offering cloud supercomputing services since 2018 to various institutions and enterprises, enabling research in areas such as genome sequencing, materials computing, and Japanese Large Language Models (LLMs). The collaboration between HPE and NVIDIA will further enhance AIST’s capabilities in training large-scale models and analyzing extensive datasets to drive innovation and scientific discovery.

Antonio Neri, President and CEO of HPE, emphasized the importance of making AI accessible and inclusive to drive advancements across industries and society. AIST’s CEO, Dr. Yoshio Tanaka, highlighted the significance of leveraging powerful supercomputing resources for machine learning tasks and supporting the user community. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, reiterated the importance of each nation having its own AI infrastructure to foster growth and productivity.

HPE, as a global edge-to-cloud company, focuses on delivering innovative technology solutions to help organizations unlock value from their data. AIST, on the other hand, is a prominent research organization in Japan dedicated to developing technologies beneficial to industry and society, as well as fostering global research collaborations.

Overall, the partnership between HPE, AIST, and NVIDIA signifies a significant step towards enhancing Japan’s AI capabilities and driving innovation in the region. With the introduction of ABCI 3.0, organizations in Japan will have access to advanced AI resources to support their research, development, and innovation initiatives.
