HPE and Danfoss Collaborate to Reduce Data Centre Energy Usage and Utilize Excess Heat

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Danfoss have joined forces to introduce HPE IT Sustainability Services: Data Center Heat Recovery, a solution designed to assist organizations in managing excess heat as they move towards more environmentally friendly IT facilities. The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in businesses is predicted to lead to an increase in energy consumption and the use of AI-optimized IT infrastructure. The International Energy Agency estimates that by 2026, the AI industry could consume ten times more electricity than it did in 2023. To combat these challenges, IT leaders and data center operators are implementing measures to decrease energy consumption, such as deploying modern energy-efficient capabilities and enhanced cooling systems. Excess heat from data centers is a consistent source of clean energy that can be utilized effectively.

The collaborative solution presented by HPE and Danfoss offers scalable modular data centers from HPE, comprising small-sized, high-density containers that can be deployed without the need for heavy industrial infrastructure. These containers are equipped with direct liquid cooling technologies that reduce total energy consumption by up to 20%. Danfoss contributes heat reuse modules that capture excess heat from data centers and provide renewable heating to nearby buildings and industries, alongside Turbocor oil-free compressors that enhance data center cooling efficiency.

Jürgen Fischer, President of Danfoss Climate Solutions, highlighted the companies’ shared vision of transforming the data center industry through innovation and decarbonization, emphasizing the positive impact on customers. The implementation of direct liquid cooling technologies within HPE’s modular data center enhances energy efficiency, optimizes power management and distribution, and results in substantial energy savings. The compact design of the data centers minimizes energy loss, enhances temperature differentials, and facilitates the effective capture of excess heat.

Furthermore, HPE underscores the agility of their modular data centers, emphasizing the elimination of heavy industrial materials to reduce costs and accelerate deployment. Deploying these modular data centers is more efficient than traditional data centers, with minimal land footprint and the option for close proximity to data generation sites, which reduces energy consumption associated with complex networking and data transfer. Sue Preston, HPE’s vice president and general manager, commended the collaboration with Danfoss, citing the combination of HPE’s innovative data center design with Danfoss’ heat reuse technology as a significant advancement in sustainability efforts.

In conclusion, the collaboration between HPE and Danfoss represents a forward-thinking approach to managing energy consumption and promoting sustainability in data center operations. The innovative solutions presented offer not only energy savings and efficiency improvements but also underline the importance of industry partnerships in driving environmental initiatives forward.
