HP seeking .7bn from Mike Lynch’s estate

Hewlett Packard (HP) is claiming $1.7bn (£1.3bn) from the estate of Mike Lynch, who died last year when his yacht sank, over HP’s acquisition of his company Autonomy, the tech giant’s lawyers told the High Court.

HP, now known as Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), bought technology firm Autonomy from Lynch in 2011, but says Lynch and former Autonomy CFO Sushovan Hussain misrepresented the company’s financials.

In a 2019 lawsuit, HPE accused Lynch of inflating Autonomy’s revenue, which it said forced it to announce an $8.8 billion writedown of the company’s value.

Judge Hildyard ruled in 2022 that HPE had “substantially succeeded” in its lawsuit, but was likely to receive “substantially less” than the $5 billion it sought in damages.

Earlier this year, it ruled that HPE suffered losses worth around £700 million through its purchase of Autonomy.
