Google has rolled out a new Gemini AI text-to-speech feature in Google Docs, allowing users to hear their documents read aloud. The update, announced in August 2025, is designed to improve accessibility for visually challenged users, support auditory learners, and help professionals catch errors more easily while editing.
Requirements
To use the AI voice reader:
- Update Google Docs to the latest version.
- Ensure Gemini AI integration is enabled in your Google Workspace.
- Open a document, go to Tools → Audio Playback, and select your preferred voice.
How it works
The AI voice reader is built directly into Google Docs:
- Activation: Access the feature via the Tools menu in Docs.
- Playback: With a single click, Gemini reads the document aloud.
- Customization: Users can choose from seven natural-sounding voices (such as Narrator or Coach) and adjust playback speed to suit their preference.
