Instagram added new options to the platform that allow users to hide the number of like and view counts of other people’s posts, as well as the number of counts for their own posts.

The new options were introduced to “relieve the strain on people’s experience on the platform,” said Facebook’s own social media company. Instagram has been testing the options in several countries since 2019, but is rolling them out globally starting Wednesday.

Instagram said its testing found that removing likes had little effect on user behavior and wellbeing despite using the platform connected to anxiety and poor mental health. The following steps describe where to find the new options on the Instagram mobile app.

How to hide “Likes” and show the number of new posts

If you activate this function, instead of a number indicating the number of likes, the user name of a follower who liked your post “and others” will be displayed.

  1. As usual, start a new Instagram post until you get to the last menu before sharing.
  2. Tap Advanced settings at the bottom of the menu.
  3. Turn on the switch next to Show likes and counts.
  4. Return to the previous menu and tap share to post.
