LAS VEGAS — Axiom Space tested an Amazon Web Services Snowcone cloud device in orbit in April during the first privately funded manned mission to the International Space Station, the companies said Thursday.

According to Amazon, the Snowcone SSD, which is commonly used to transfer on-premises data to the cloud, had passed NASA pre-mission certification with no changes other than wrapping the exterior in protective yellow foil.

During the mission, an on-device machine learning algorithm automatically reviewed, cataloged, and identified objects in large-format photos taken during experiments conducted by Axiom. Eliminating the need to transmit data to Earth and back cut an 18-hour process to about 20 minutes.
