In Australia, our collaborators at the Wildlife Observatory of Australia (WildObs) used the open source SpeciesNet model and trained it to identify species that were not part of the original model but are locally important. Australia is home to many species found nowhere else in the world, and these species are a priority for monitoring and conservation. A version of SpeciesNet that specializes in local wildlife allows groups to keep tabs on iconic, threatened or endangered species in their region to help conserve wild populations.
SpeciesNet can identify species from multiple angles, in different lighting conditions, and when only part of the animal is visible. But sometimes animals get curious and look directly into the camera, creating a real portrait.
