How Amazon, Microsoft and others are helping after WA flooding

Delivering supplies to a shelter in Monroe full of people affected by floods was a full-circle moment for Abe Diaz, the head of Amazon’s disaster relief team.

Using the company’s vast network of delivery stations and vehicles, Diaz and his crew are delivering 50,000 emergency supplies to front-line nonprofits across Western Washington.

The supplies Amazon brings to disaster areas are somewhat tailored to the situation. But the company, known for obsessively collecting and analyzing data for its e-commerce business, has prepositioned frequently requested products in disaster hubs so they are ready to be hauled to communities in need.

These include hygiene kits, diapers, muck-and-gut kits for flooded homes and medical devices.

Evacuation orders for several Washington cities were rescinded or downgraded as of Thursday morning. But the damage left behind by floodwaters could draw out the recovery times, and families may have to spend the holidays away from their homes. Working…
