How is AI changing the way we work? Our previous research on the economic impact of AI looked at the labor market as a whole and covered a variety of different occupations. But what if we took a closer look at some of the early adopters of AI technology – namely us?
Looking inward, we surveyed 132 Anthropic engineers and researchers, conducted 53 in-depth qualitative interviews, and examined internal Claude Code usage data in August 2025 to find out how AI use is changing things at Anthropic. We find that the use of AI is radically changing the nature of software developers’ work, generating both hope and concern.
Our research shows that a workplace is facing significant change: engineers are doing much more, becoming more “complete” (able to successfully complete tasks beyond their normal expertise), accelerating their rate of learning and iteration, and tackling previously neglected tasks.
