Malaysian-born Hock Tan emerged as the highest-paid CEO in the United States last year, raking in a staggering $162 million in compensation. This revelation comes from a list compiled by the Wall Street Journal, showcasing Tan’s consistent dominance in the salary charts since 2006. To qualify for this hefty payment, Tan had to fulfil specific conditions, including maintaining his CEO position for five years and ensuring that Broadcom’s share price met designated targets post-October 2025.

Following closely behind Tan was Nikesh Arora, the CEO of cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks, who amassed $151 million in compensation. Securing the third spot on the list was Steven Schwarzman, the head of investment management company Blackstone, with earnings totaling $120 million. The survey conducted by the Diary also unveiled that median executive pay saw an 8.35% increase, reaching a new record of $15.7 million, based on data from over 400 companies.

The study highlighted that a majority of executives received a raise of at least 9% compared to the previous year, with one in four individuals enjoying a substantial increment of 25% or more. Notably, chip and computer hardware companies accounted for six of the top 25 performers, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang leading the pack. Huang witnessed a remarkable 215% surge in earnings year-over-year, reaching $34.2 million, while Meta Platforms executive Mark Zuckerberg recorded a 194% increase in earnings, totaling $24.4 million.

Overall, the data reflected a significant upward trend in executive compensation, with tech companies like Broadcom, Palo Alto Networks, Nvidia, and Meta Platforms showcasing substantial growth in earnings for their top executives. The survey shed light on the lucrative nature of CEO pay in the US corporate landscape, indicating a competitive environment where top talent commands astronomical salaries based on performance and market trends.
