Maisie Derlega, a high school senior at Jackson-Reed High School in the DMV region, was recently announced as the national winner of the Google Doodle Contest 2024. Her winning entry, titled “Family Dinner,” was featured on Google’s homepage. Derlega explained that her artwork was inspired by her family’s weekly Sunday dinners, which are a tradition that she hopes will continue as she heads off to college next year.
Thousands of students from across the United States participated in the contest by creating art pieces based on the theme “My wish for the next 25 years.” Derlega’s artwork showcased people gathered around a family table, with the food arranged to spell out “Google.” She expressed her desire for this tradition to remain a constant in her life as things change and she moves away for college.
Derlega plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in art and design. She discussed how art has always been an integral part of her life, starting from a young age, and how her involvement in her high school newspaper and magazine helped shape her into a more serious and dedicated artist.
As the national winner of the Google Doodle Contest, Derlega will receive a $55,000 college scholarship, Google-themed gear, and a trophy. Her high school will also be awarded a $50,000 technology package. Throughout the process, Derlega recognized the support of her family, who encouraged her to participate in the contest and helped spread the word to garner votes.
Reflecting on her win, Derlega expressed her shock and gratitude at being chosen as the national winner. She emphasized the importance of her family’s support in her artistic journey and how their encouragement served as a reminder of why she pursued art in the first place. Overall, Derlega’s winning entry captured the essence of family, tradition, and the hope for continuity in the face of change.
