Hegseth calls Anthropic’s Amodei a “crazy” and defends the Pentagon’s use of AI

Washington | US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US would not allow artificial intelligence to make deadly targeting decisions, even as he called Anthropic boss Dario Amodei an “ideological madman” after a recent dispute over the military use of the company’s chatbot.

Hegseth again criticized Anthropic for its insistence that its Claude chatbot would not be used for mass surveillance of Americans or for fully autonomous weapons operations. Those demands led the Pentagon to take the unprecedented step in March of declaring Anthropic a threat to national security and banning its products from the military.
