Head of US intelligence agency warns of Iran-backed influence campaign fueling and financing anti-Israel demonstrations

The Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, has warned that Iranian regime actors are engaging in influence campaigns to fuel and fund anti-Israel protests in the United States. These actors are posing as activists online, encouraging protests, and providing financial support to protesters. While many American citizens participating in the protests may have genuine concerns about the Hamas-Israel conflict, Haines emphasized the need to be cautious of foreign actors attempting to exploit domestic political debates.

Haines previously informed Congress about aggressive Iranian influence campaigns in connection with election cycles, noting that the regime has been utilizing social media for its cyber activities. The intelligence update was part of regular updates on foreign activities seeking to influence US elections, in response to concerns about foreign interference in past elections.

Following the October 7 Hamas attack in southern Israel, protests erupted globally, including in the US. These protests aimed to disrupt public life, promote anti-Israel policies, and target pro-Israel institutions and individuals. The movement also led to vandalism against Jewish businesses and campuses occupied by student activists pushing for divestment from Israel.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned Iran and other foreign actors engaging in influence activities to sow divisions in the US. He affirmed the US government’s commitment to exposing attempts to undermine democracy and society, while also defending Americans’ right to protest peacefully. However, foreign interference in internal affairs and attempts to escalate conflicts will not be tolerated.

President Biden has been briefed on the matter, indicating the administration’s awareness and response to foreign influence campaigns in the US. The government will continue to support Americans exercising their First Amendment rights while confronting and denouncing foreign attempts to interfere in domestic affairs. The balance between free expression and the threat posed by foreign interference remains a key aspect of maintaining a functioning democracy.
