Cyber criminals seeking to blackmail Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department have published extensive private files on five current and former officials.
The files, each about 100 pages long, are labeled “Background Investigation Documents” and “Confidential” next to the department seal. They contain a lot of personal information as well as arrest history, housing and financial documents, polygraph results and detailed information about their education and professional background.
The hackers are one of several well-known ransomware gangs who hack an organization, then lock their files or threaten to lose them if they don’t pay a ransom fee. Many, including the MPD hackers, post evidence of their exploits on dedicated dark internet sites to put pressure on their victims to pay.
