Grok, Elon Musk’s AI tool, has turned off its image creation feature for the vast majority of users after major protests against its use to create sexually explicit and violent images.
The move comes after Musk was threatened with fines, regulatory action and reports of a possible X ban in the UK.
The tool was used to manipulate images of women to remove their clothing and place them in sexualized positions. The corresponding function has been disabled except for paying subscribers.
In a post on X, Musk’s social media network, Grok said: “Image creation and editing is currently limited to paid subscribers.”
This means that the vast majority of the platform’s users cannot create images with Grok, and those who do have their full details and credit card information stored in X so that they can be identified if the feature is abused.
