Amid fatigue with dating apps and concerns about the safety of its users, Grindr is testing high-priced subscriptions that incorporate AI to help it find matches.
The gay and bisexual men’s app displays user profiles in a grid to those in the immediate area, with photos, stats and bios designed to enable users to find suitable people, from hookups to dating. Grindr claims to have 15 million monthly active users worldwide.
The company has started using AI to detect when users on the app may be underage through messages that indicate the user is under 18. Since December, Grindr has also started verifying the age of its users in Australia through facial or ID checks, in accordance with the eSafety online codes.
While it’s still early days, it’s hoped this review will limit underage users and also deter those who have used the app under false pretenses to hook up with men, only to then attack and, in some cases, rob those they target.
