Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak received applause rather than boos from graduates in a commencement speech as he told them they had “AI, actual intelligence.” During Grand Valley State University’s commencement ceremony, Wozniak emphasized the value of human intelligence to graduates. “They all have AI, actual intelligence. My whole life in the tech world, I’ve been following people trying to figure out how to make a brain. Software, hardware, Synapse chips, and I was at a company where the engineers figured out how to make a brain: (it) takes nine months,” Wozniak said. The university awarded Wozniak an honorary doctorate during the ceremony, noting that his legacy “reflects the power of curiosity, creativity and innovation to change the world.” Wozniak’s comments received a more positive response from graduates than other recent incidents in which valedictorians were booed for discussing and praising artificial intelligence (AI).
