A group of primary care physicians has begun using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to help detect skin cancer.
Software company Skin Analytics said First Medical had become the first GP practice in Jersey Use the DERM app to review images of moles and lesions if skin cancer is suspected.
The app’s developers said the AI was trained on images of common cancers, precancerous lesions and benign lesions, with the aim of enabling “faster and safer clinical decision-making” and preventing unnecessary referrals.
Dr. Brendan Loane, GP partner at First Medical – with practices in St Helier, St Peter and St Clement – said the app would benefit patients and doctors.
Dr. Loane said: “We are extremely proud to be the first GP practice in Jersey to offer this wonderful innovation to our patients.”
“Our patients with skin lesions receive the security they are looking for as early as possible.
“Doctors benefit from the fact that worrying cases of skin cancer are detected and treated early…”
