Google recently launched a new VPN for Pixel owners, initially available on the Pixel tablet but support was withdrawn shortly after. The Pixel 8 series offers a more integrated VPN experience that eliminates the need for the Google One app, operating through the “Google One VPN” app that was briefly labeled as “Google Pixel VPN” on the Play Store. The app has since been renamed “Google VPN” to align with recent updates for the Pixel 7 and Fold series.
Following a recent release on Thursday, Pixel tablet owners were briefly able to download and set up the VPN. Officially, Google VPN is compatible with Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, and 8a devices. However, support for Pixel tablets has since been removed and users are reporting issues connecting to the VPN after installation.
It is disappointing that Google’s VPN service does not extend to Pixel tablet owners, especially considering that these devices are part of the same hardware generation as the Pixel 7 and are priced similarly to the A Series. The VPN offers enhanced security and privacy for Pixel phone users, but the lack of support for tablets limits its accessibility across the Pixel ecosystem. The ongoing changes and updates to the VPN app indicate that Google is actively working to improve the service and expand its compatibility with different Pixel devices.
