WASHINGTON – With China pouring money into emerging technologies, the U.S. government and its tech companies need a fresh approach to stay ahead of the curve in artificial intelligence, microelectronics and other major military innovations, said former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

While a free market country won’t take on technology development like China does, the US needs a more assertive role, he said at a conference Thursday. And US companies cannot keep up with Chinese innovations on their own. Instead, he proposed an alliance between government and industry in order to maintain the country’s technical lead.
