Google’s new AI search feature is under fire for providing inaccurate and misleading answers to user queries, suggesting things like eating rocks and mixing glue with pizza cheese. The feature, called “AI Overviews,” was launched in the United States last week and became available to some users in the UK last month. While the tool is designed to simplify information retrieval, it has been criticized for its erratic behavior since its release, with examples of such responses circulating on social media.
According to the BBC, some of the responses generated by the AI seemed to be based on content from Reddit or satirical websites like The Onion. For example, one response advised users to mix “non-toxic glue” with cheese to make it stick to pizza, and another suggested that humans should eat one rock a day based on geologists’ recommendations. The AI also claimed that only 17 of the 42 American presidents were white and falsely stated that former US President Barack Obama is Muslim.
Google has responded to the criticism by stating that these examples are rare and not representative of how the tool usually operates. A Google spokesperson reassured users that the vast majority of AI summaries provide high-quality information with links for further exploration. The company claims to have conducted extensive testing before the tool’s launch to ensure its accuracy and high standard of quality.
In cases where policy violations were identified, Google states that it has taken action and is using these instances to improve and refine its AI system. This is not the first time an AI-powered product has faced backlash for inaccurate or problematic responses. In previous instances, AI tools fabricated scandalous incidents and faced criticism for misappropriating celebrity voices without permission.
Despite these isolated incidents, Google maintains its commitment to providing high-quality information through its AI search feature. The company continues to refine its system based on feedback and improve the user experience. Users are encouraged to exercise caution when using AI-based tools and to report any inaccuracies or policy violations encountered during their search queries.
