This week, Google announced a new AI Inbox View for Gmail that replaces the traditional email list with an AI-generated list of tasks and topics that you can track based on the contents of your inbox. It’s not widely available yet, but I have access, and in the few hours I’ve spent playing around with it, I can see how AI Inbox could be a helpful or even transformative way to manage your inbox. But for now it won’t change the way I manage my email, and I’m not sure it ever will.
Before I delve deeper, I should note a few things. AI Inbox is a very early product, currently only available to “trusted testers.” It’s unlikely you’ll be able to take advantage of this just yet, and what it looks like now may not be representative of what it will be when it’s rolled out widely. The feature currently only works with personal Gmail accounts, not Workspace accounts. Therefore, I could only see how she handled my personal inbox, not my much busier work inbox.
