Google (GOOGL, Financials) has withdrawn its antitrust complaint against Microsoft after EU regulators opened a fresh investigation into competitive practices across the cloud computing sector. The company said the new inquiry gives the European Commission a broader avenue to address concerns it had raised last year about customer lock-in on Microsoft’s Azure platform.
Google’s complaint accused Microsoft of structuring its cloud services in ways that made it harder for customers to switch providers. The company said it no longer sees a need for a parallel complaint now that regulators are reviewing whether Azure and Amazon Web Services hold market power that could limit competition. AWS leads the cloud market with a 30% share, followed by Microsoft at 20% and Google at 13%.
