Google TV introduces picture-in-picture mode, with a catch

Google TV is set to receive Picture-in-Picture (PiP) support with the upcoming Android 14 for TV update, although it will be limited to select apps such as communication and health, which may restrict its usefulness. This feature allows users to play videos and streams within a floating window overlaid on the screen, similar to how it functions on Android phones. However, Android TV has not previously supported PiP functionality, but Google is now introducing it to Google TV.

While some high-end devices like the Nvidia Shield TV Pro and select Sony Android TVs already support PiP, most streaming boxes and televisions lack this feature due to low-end hardware and limited RAM. Google has specified that PiP support on Google TV will only be available for “qualified” devices, meaning not all current Google TV models may support it when the Android 14 for TV update rolls out.

Developers must declare the category of their Android TV apps for PiP support, and Google will review and approve these requests. The company has established guidelines to prevent misuse of PiP, such as displaying ads or activating PiP without user intervention. This ensures a better user experience and prevents spam apps from exploiting the feature incorrectly.

Despite the potential benefits of having a PiP window for streaming content on Google TV, the restrictions imposed by Google may limit its practicality. The feature will only be available for specific types of apps like communication, smart home, health, and ticker services, excluding popular streaming platforms like Netflix or YouTube.

The launch of Android 14 for TV is expected later this year, but the update may take some time to reach all compatible streaming devices and TVs with Google TV. Overall, while the addition of PiP support is a welcome enhancement to the Google TV experience, the limitations and restrictions imposed may impact its overall usefulness for users.
