Google Translate receives its largest update yet, as reported by Digital Trends

Google Translate is expanding its language library by adding support for 110 new languages, bringing the total count to 243. This update is made possible by leveraging AI models, specifically the PaLM 2 model. Some of the new languages include Afar, Cantonese, Manx, NKO, Punjabi (Shahmukhi), Tamazight (Amazigh), and Tok Pisin. Around 25% of the new languages come from Africa, marking the largest expansion of African languages by Google. The addition of these languages allows translation for about 8% of the world’s population, catering to major world languages as well as languages spoken by indigenous communities.

The PaLM 2 model offers improvements in multilingual experience, coding capabilities, and reasoning capabilities. By partnering with expert linguists and native speakers, Google aims to further support a wider range of language varieties and spelling conventions in the future. This initiative is part of Google’s 1,000 Languages Initiative, which aims to support the 1,000 most widely spoken languages globally.
