Google Translate now includes support for over 110 additional languages

Google has announced that it is adding support for 110 new languages to Google Translate, bringing the total number of supported languages to 243. This expansion is the largest to date for the popular translation service. The addition of these new languages was made possible by Google’s PaLM 2 AI Language Model, which helped Translate learn languages that are related to each other, such as Awadhi and Marwadi, as well as French creoles like Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole.

One of the most requested languages for Google Translate, Cantonese, is now supported due to the advancements in technology. Cantonese, which often overlaps with Mandarin in writing, presented a challenge in finding data and training models. Isaac Caswell, a representative from Google, stated that approximately a quarter of the new languages added to Translate come from Africa. These new languages are spoken by at least a million people each, with some spoken by hundreds of millions of people.

Overall, this expansion is a significant leap for Google Translate in providing access to more languages and helping users communicate more easily across different cultures and regions. The addition of languages such as Cantonese and African languages demonstrates Google’s commitment to making its translation service more inclusive and accessible to users worldwide. The new languages will be available to users in the coming weeks, allowing them to translate text, documents, and conversations in a wider range of languages than ever before.
