Lost in the hustle and bustle of yesterday Pixel 6 launch is the fact that Android 12 also shipped for older Pixel phones. Google took the odd step the release of Android 12 to Google’s AOSP (Android Open Source Project) repository on October 4th, but no ready-made binaries were shipped for Pixel phones, which are usually updated on day one. With the launch of Pixel 6, Google’s marketing department finally opened the floodgates a blog post, a new website, a virtual AR statue, and created for compatible devices.

Android 12 is officially available for the Pixel 5, 5a, 4, 4a, 3 and 3a. Android 12 is the first major update that the Pixel 2 missed, although it has been without security updates for a while. You have a few options to get Android 12. The easiest thing to do is to wait for the update on your device. This will happen sometime in the next month when it is automatically provisioned to users. Another option is to go to developer.google.com and Download the OTA update for your device. There are also full system images that will erase your existing data. Using either of the last two requires some light command line work and downloading tools, and Google has full instructions on their website.

Android 12 is one of the biggest versions of Android in recent times and it comes with a complete overhaul of the user interface called “Material You”. Every part of the user interface is now color coordinated with your wallpaper, and Google is quickly rolling out support for Material You themes in its largest apps. There’s been a ton of changes to the notification panel, widgets, and system user interface, and there are new privacy notifications for continued use of the microphone or camera. Android 12 brings Android closer to the Linux kernel than ever before, with fewer forks and less release lag between Android and Linux. There is an incremental file system for play-as-you download games, new emojis, and many other things.

As always, the Android update treadmill will continue. We already have details on a new one Publication in the middle of the cycle from Android, which many people call “Android 12.1”. So far, the leaked features seem to have focused on tablets and foldables.

Yesterday, An entry of Google’s official “androidbetaprogram” Reddit account laid out the future of the beta program for registered users, saying, “If you do nothing and keep your Pixel device enrolled in the beta program, you will automatically receive the next Android 12 beta Updates in December. “

We will mark our calendars.
