Google Podcasts shut down globally earlier this week after founder Zack Reneau-Wedeen departed in September 2021, and the app has not received any feature updates since then. The app had started going downhill in January 2023 when it was removed from Google Search. Creators are advised to remove any links to Google Podcasts from their websites and to download their podcast statistics from Google Podcast Manager by July 30. The website also offers assistance with submitting RSS feeds to YouTube. For listeners, Google has not updated their help pages, making it seem like the app is still available, but YouTube Music is being recommended as an alternative to play RSS feeds.

There have been reports regarding the podcast “Call Her Daddy” seeking a new buyer, with Spotify deciding not to sell ads for the show beyond this year. SiriusXM is being considered as a potential buyer, but they have set high minimum download requirements. Spotify recently introduced a new $10.99 basic plan without audiobooks, available as a downgrade option on their website.

The Stitcher app closed last year, but their RSS feed checker is still active, monitoring feeds every hour. The podcast analytics service, OP3, is now measuring over 17 million downloads per month and continues to be available as a free service. There are discussions about a potential “Podcasting 2.0” event to help podcasters adapt to new features in the industry.

In podcast news, “In Bubble Trouble” features an interview with author Benedict Evans, “The Money Trench” launches as a music industry podcast, “The Golden Girls Deep Dive Podcast” is hosted by Patrick Hinds and Jennifer Simard, and “Think Big, Buy Small” offers insights into entrepreneurship through acquisitions. These podcasts cover a range of topics from music industry news to business leadership trends.

Various companies such as Audacity, Google, OP3, SiriusXM, Spotify, and Stitcher are mentioned in the content. Podcast data for June 24 shows popular podcasts on platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and there were over 192,000 new episodes published in the past week. Upcoming events include Podcast Movement 2024 in August, with opportunities to add events and job vacancies to the listings.

Overall, the podcast industry has seen significant changes recently, with the closure of Google Podcasts and the rise of new shows covering diverse topics from music to business leadership. Creators and listeners are encouraged to adapt to these changes by exploring alternative platforms and staying informed about industry developments.
