Google is currently working on improving the overheating warning messages for Pixel devices. The current notification simply states that some functions are limited while the device cools down. Users can tap for more information, where it explains that the phone will try to cool down automatically and still be usable, but may work slower until it cools down.
In the upcoming update, a more descriptive warning titled “Phone needs to cool down: You may experience slower performance” will be displayed. It advises users to avoid direct sunlight and close any battery-consuming apps. The full pre-emergency dialog will provide more details on what actions the phone is taking to cool down, such as limiting performance speed and disabling the 5G network.
The Adaptive Thermal service will monitor the battery temperature in five-minute intervals, and an emergency state is entered when the device reaches 125.6 degrees Fahrenheit. At 131 degrees Fahrenheit, a pre-shutdown dialog box will inform the user that the phone will turn off due to high temperature in about 30 seconds.
This update to Battery Health Services is currently not widely available, but version 1.27.x includes optimizations for adaptive battery functionality. The enhanced overheating warnings may be introduced to Pixel devices later through a server-side update. The development is expected to provide users with more detailed information and guidance on managing overheating issues proactively.
