Google Password Manager now supports Family Sharing

Google has recently introduced a new feature to its Password Manager that allows for family sharing of login credentials within a family group. This feature was announced in February 2024, although it is still in the process of rolling out. While this family sharing functionality is a step in the right direction, Google still lacks the ability to share one-time passwords, leaving users to manually copy and share credentials which is less secure.

The family sharing feature works by securely sharing passwords with family members through Google Password Manager. When a password is shared, it automatically appears in the family member’s Password Manager for easy access. The rollout of this feature appears to be gradual, and users can check for updates by installing the May 2024 Play system update on their Android phones. This feature is currently only available on Android and not yet on Chrome for desktop, but it is expected to expand soon.

In addition to the family sharing feature, Google is also implementing a Material You makeover for its Password Manager. This redesign aims to improve the user experience and aesthetic of the password management tool. Overall, Google’s Password Manager continues to evolve and improve, offering a free and integrated solution for managing login credentials across Chrome and Android platforms.

Despite these advancements, Google still has room for improvement, particularly in enabling one-time password sharing within the Password Manager. This feature is currently missing, forcing users to resort to less secure manual sharing methods. By addressing this limitation and continuing to enhance its user experience, Google can further solidify its position as a leading password management solution in the market.
