Google has officially discontinued its Google One VPN service, starting from April 2023, users no longer have access to the VPN. The VPN was initially introduced in October 2020 for users on the $9.99 per month plan, then expanded to all plans in March 2023, including the $1.99/month deal. It was accessible via the Google One app on Android and iOS, as well as through dedicated Mac and Windows clients.
The Google One VPN was marketed as an additional layer of online protection, rather than a tool for accessing geo-blocked services. Google conducted a third-party system audit, published a White paper, and provided an open-source Client API for transparency.
Google cited low usage as the reason for discontinuing the VPN, with plans to focus on supporting more on-demand features like Fitbit Premium and Nest Aware. Meanwhile, owners of Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, and 8a devices continue to have access to a “Google Pixel VPN” as a built-in feature with limited functionality compared to the now-defunct Google One VPN.
Google Fi Wireless subscribers also have access to a VPN service, as an alternative to the now-discontinued Google One VPN. As of June 21, existing connections to the Google One VPN will no longer connect, and the service is officially disabled. Instructions for removing the Google One VPN app on Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS devices have been provided by Google.
Overall, Google One has made the decision to discontinue its VPN service due to low user engagement, with plans to focus on other features and services. Users who previously had access to Google One VPN are advised to remove the app from their devices and explore alternative VPN options if needed.
