Google Messages introduces double Floating Action Button (FAB) to enhance Gemini promotion

Google Messages recently announced a significant update during the I/O 2024 event, where Gemini exited beta testing. One notable change is the introduction of a double floating action button (FAB) design within the app. The “Start Chat” FAB now features a smaller Gemini FAB placed above it, enhancing the user experience. However, some users reported that the alignment of the rectangle and square shapes appeared off when interacting with the elements. This issue seems to be resolved when scrolling through the app, providing a visually correct experience.

This new design approach mirrors a similar feature seen on Google Drive, where the “New” FAB is coupled with a scan shortcut. In Google Messages, the camera icon disappears during scrolling, offering a cleaner interface. Upon tapping the Gemini FAB, users are directed to the Gemini chat conversation, allowing quick access to the generative AI chatbot. This integration is expected to enhance user engagement and provide concise responses. Notably, Google has removed the previous Pixel and Samsung device requirements for utilizing this feature.

While the updated Gemini FAB is currently only available to select beta users, Google is planning to expand its functionality. In the future, a Gemini icon will be added to the top right corner of the Gmail app for Android and iOS users. This integration will enable users to access the question and answer function directly from their Gmail app. Additionally, on desktop web browsers, users will be able to access the Side panel by adjusting the brightness settings.

Overall, the new Gemini FAB design in Google Messages signifies a step towards optimizing user engagement and providing seamless access to the chatbot features. By incorporating this feature within popular Google apps like Gmail and Drive, Google aims to streamline the user experience and make generative AI technology more accessible to a broader audience. With continued updates and improvements, Gemini is expected to become a staple in Google’s suite of AI-driven products.
