Google recently removed numerous images of Austrian landmarks that were edited by environmental activists to illustrate the potential impacts of climate change. These AI-altered photos, which showed dry lakes, snowless Alpine peaks, and a transformed Danube River as they might appear in 2070,were uploaded by the Austrian group Letzte Generation to Google Maps.
However, Google removed these images on June 22, citing a violation of its policy which prohibits content that is not based on real experiences or accurate representations of locations. According to a Google spokesperson, the company’s guidelines require that posts and edits be based on truthful information, and any content that is deliberately false, stolen, defamatory, or irrelevant will be removed.
In response to the removal of the photos, Letzte Generation expressed little surprise, stating that Google, along with authorities and large corporations, often ignore the climate crisis. The group explained that their intention in posting the images was to raise awareness among tourists using Google Maps to plan their trips about the dangers of climate change and rising temperatures.
Letzte Generation has indicated that they will be taking further actions to raise awareness not only in person but also online. The group remains committed to drawing attention to the urgent need for action on climate change and its potential consequences.
