Google is simplifying passkey sign-in on Android and Wear OS

Google is updating Android 15 and Wear OS 5 to streamline the account selection and biometric verification process. This will make signing in easier by combining these steps into a single screen, reducing the number of taps required. The update will also integrate passcodes directly into the Credential Manager, allowing for quicker access to favorite services and applications. These improvements will also extend to Wear OS 5, simplifying the login process directly from wearable devices, without needing external apps or services.

In a recent Google I/O session on “Identity and Password Best Practices,” it was revealed that Android 15 will introduce a one-touch sign-in process. This update will combine account selection and biometric prompting into a more seamless experience. Instead of having to tap “continue” to confirm your account and then authenticate using fingerprint, face, or PIN, users will only need to perform one tap on the streamlined screen. For those with multiple accounts, a “More Options” button will make it easy to switch between accounts.

Furthermore, users will have access to key options directly in the Credential Manager, speeding up logins to various services and applications. This feature will also be available in Wear OS 5, simplifying the login process on wearable devices. Google has announced that this feature will support external password managers like Dashlane.

Another useful update is the addition of a “Restore” passkey feature for phones and tablets. This feature streamlines the sign-in process to apps when switching to a new device. By storing a restore key in the Credential Manager, this key can be automatically moved to a new device if cloud backups are turned on, eliminating the need to log in to each app individually.

These updates are expected to be rolled out later this year when Android 15 and Wear OS 5 are officially launched. Overall, these changes aim to enhance user experience, making it easier and more convenient to access accounts and services on Android devices and Wear OS devices.
