Hardly any other sector is as stubbornly affected by the promises of artificial intelligence as education. Could one of these promises have finally been fulfilled?
The textbook is the most enduring instrument of education, dating back to the 4th century AD with the Ars Minor by Aelius Donatus. In the United States, the New England Primer of 1690 was a foundational text that governed American education for more than 150 years. But the landscape has changed radically. Once a cornerstone of community education, the textbook has evolved into a global powerhouse. It is now a big business and is mainly run by a few large publishers. These essential teaching materials represent a powerful, ubiquitous and highly profitable enterprise that is visible in almost every educational institution worldwide.
