Earlier this week, Australian developer Chris Lacy tweeted about a strange experience while logging into a rarely used Google account. When Google sent its two-factor authentication code via SMS, the message popped up along with an ad with a link for VPN services. Given the cons of phishing or the spread of malware attached to code specifically designed for keep your account safe, that didn’t go down well.

While Lacy did not name the carrier who delivered the text, Mark Risher Google, Senior Director of Google Identity and Security clarified that the ad is not from his company.

The official statement from Google on the matter is, “These are not our ads and we are currently working with the carrier to understand why this happened.” The messaging app on Android didn’t show a preview and flagged it as possible spam, but it’s one less …
