Google announced in October 2021 that it was introducing continuous scrolling for mobile users in its search feature. In December 2022, the same feature was added for desktop users, with the promise of faster search results. However, it has now been revealed that Google is reverting to the old pagination system due to users’ dissatisfaction and faster access to requested search results. This change may impact SEO results as users will now have to click on page 2 instead of scrolling down for more links. Desktop users will return to the old pagination layouts while the same change will be implemented on mobile devices in the coming months. This decision comes after the launch of AI overviews in US user search, where Google faced criticism for providing factually incorrect answers based on external link search data. Reports show that AI overview responses only appear in a small percentage of Google searches.
