Google introduces Gemini side panels for Gmail and other Workspace apps

Google is expanding the accessibility of its Gemini feature in its Workspace apps for paying customers. This includes the deployment of Gemini side panels in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Gmail, as well as the release of the Gemini for Gmail app on Android and iOS. At this year’s Google I/O event, the company referred to Gemini side panels as “the connective tissue across multiple applications with an AI-powered workflow.”

The side panel in Docs can assist users in refining and rephrasing their writing, summarizing information, suggesting improvements, and generating new content based on other files. In Sheets, it can help with creating tables, generating formulas, and providing guidance on various features. The Slides side panel offers tools for generating custom images and summarizing presentations, while in Drive, users can summarize multiple documents simultaneously without needing to open each one individually.

In Gmail, Gemini can summarize email threads, suggest replies, assist in composing new emails, and help users find information from their inbox or Drive files. The Gemini for Gmail app on Android and iOS also supports summarizing email threads. While there is no side panel in the mobile apps, users can access a button within their emails to generate a summary. Next month, Gemini will introduce contextual smart replies, which provide one-touch response options based on the conversation’s content. Additionally, Gmail Q&A will become available, allowing users to search for information within their emails by typing questions like “What time does Chloe’s recital start on Saturday?”

To access these features, users need to be subscribed to Google One AI Premium or have access to the Gemini add-on for Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium.
