Former Qualcomm XR division head, Hugo Swart, has joined Google to lead the company’s XR ecosystem technology and strategy efforts. The announcement was made on LinkedIn a few months ago, expressing excitement for the future and gratitude for the opportunity from Shahram Izadi. Swart was instrumental in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR advancements before leaving in February, with Alex Katouzian now overseeing XR at Qualcomm.
Swart’s move to Google comes at a crucial time for XR, following the company’s strategic technology partnership with Magic Leap to compete with Meta, Apple, and others in the growing AR headset market. Google faced setbacks last year when it reportedly shelved its Project Iris AR glasses amid internal restructuring and leadership changes.
On the other hand, Google is working on a new Android-based platform for Samsung’s upcoming XR headsets, which will utilize Qualcomm silicon. There are also rumors of a “Micro XR” platform for XR glasses, code-named “Betty,” being developed internally at Google.
