Google DeepMind’s AI-Generated Jokes Show a Retro Twist: A Mix of 1950s Cruise Ship Humor, According to Alphabet’s Experiment (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL)

A recent study conducted by Google DeepMind researchers delved into the capabilities of artificial intelligence when it comes to generating comedy content. Led by Piotr Mirowski, the study involved 20 professional comedians incorporating AI, such as large language models (LLM) like ChatGPT by OpenAI, into their work. While the AI models proved useful in structuring monologues and producing drafts, they struggled to create original and engaging comedy material. The jokes generated by AI were described as bland and generic, reminiscent of outdated cruise ship comedy.

The study also uncovered biases in AI models, with some participants noting that the models had limitations in generating comedy content from different perspectives, such as that of an Asian woman versus a white man. Tuhin Chakrabarty, a computer science researcher from Columbia University, highlighted the challenges AI faces in producing truly creative and surprising content due to its design focused on predicting one word at a time.

The use of AI in comedy is not entirely new, as past instances have shown promise. For example, a ChatGPT jailbreak was utilized in generating comic roasts, while actor Ryan Reynolds used ChatGPT to write a commercial script that turned out to be a comedic success. Tech mogul Elon Musk even launched his own AI company called xAI, with its first product Grok known for its sassy responses inspired by the humor of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

Overall, while AI has shown some potential in assisting with comedy content creation, the study revealed its limitations in producing original and engaging material that resonates with audiences. Despite efforts to infuse AI with humor and creativity, there is still much work to be done in refining AI capabilities in the realm of comedy.
