Google announces that ads will soon appear in AI Overviews on Search

Google announced that it will start including ads in its AI overviews in search results for US users. These ads will only show up if they are relevant to the user’s query and the information gathered by the AI. Google stated that previous tests showed users found the ads in their summaries to be useful.

The company plans to create more opportunities for consumers searching for information through Search with the addition of ads. Ads will be displayed in AI overviews under a section called “Sponsored,” and will only appear if they are relevant to what the user is looking for and the data gathered by the AI. For example, if a user searches for ways to remove wrinkles from clothes, the AI-powered overview may provide quick fixes and helpful websites, with ads for clothes straightening products displayed at the bottom.

Google mentioned that advertisers do not need to take any specific action for these ads to function correctly. The decision to implement ads in AI overviews was based on prior testing and feedback from users, who found ads appearing above and below the AI-generated content to be helpful.

The rollout of ads in AI overviews will begin with US users before expanding to other locations, although the exact timeline for this expansion was not provided. The company initiated testing for AI overviews in March for the general public in the United States, after appointing a new search chief, Liz Reid. Google aimed to improve its AI’s ability to search multiple sources on the web to provide accurate answers to user queries.

During I/O 2024, Google highlighted upcoming generative AI features for AI search and overviews. These features are expected to enhance the understanding of complex questions, allowing users to ask questions without needing to split their queries. Users will also have the option to fine-tune their AI overview by requesting simplified language or further breakdown of results for better comprehension. The tuning feature and improved query understanding will soon be available to Search Labs testers in English (US).
