Google announces it will officially move forward with Botetourt County data center

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) Google purchased more than 300 acres of land in Botetourt County’s Greenfield campus for $14 million back in June.

Since then, the data center was simply a proposal, but Thursday morning, Google and county officials said it’s now officially moving forward.

“As someone said on the team, it was an awkward time for the development in between whenever the land was purchased and today,” Botetourt County Administrator Gary Larrowe said. “We were very pleased that they are actually moving forward.”

In addition to buying the land, Google also committed $4 million for county initiatives. With the combined $18 million, Botetourt County upgraded infrastructure across numerous branches, including the sheriff’s office, Fire and EMS, and the school system.

Botetourt County said it also expects to collect an additional $10 million every year in tax money for the site. While county officials are excited, community members said they’ve felt silenced during…
