Giants to open Oracle Stadium for fans to pay tribute to Mays and watch Rickwood game

Giants fans are unable to attend this Thursday’s game due to special celebrations happening at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. However, San Francisco has made accommodations by opening Oracle Park to fans to watch the game between the Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. The game at Rickwood Field will be televised on the scoreboard at Oracle Park, where images of Willie Mays will be shown before and after the game. A sculpture of Mays will be featured in center field, and a condolence book will be available for fans to sign on the warning track.

Gates at Oracle Park will open at 12 pm PT with the first pitch at Rickwood scheduled for 4:15 pm PT. The event will end at 8 pm PT and admission is free for all attendees. San Francisco will also host a public celebration of Willie Mays’ life at a later date, with more details to come.

The Giants honored Mays by wearing “May 24” patches on their uniforms during Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. This tribute is likely to continue throughout the 2024 MLB season as the team plays in honor of the late legend. Giants ace Logan Webb expressed the team’s commitment to playing for Mays, acknowledging his importance as “The Giant” and stating that they will give their best in his memory.

Willie Mays, also known as “The Say Hey Kid,” passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Tuesday. Despite his passing, Mays’ legacy will endure, and the Giants community will continue to celebrate his life and contributions. Fans are encouraged to download and follow the Giants Talk podcast for updates on the team and further details on upcoming events.
