AWS has officially launched the new AWS Graviton4-based Amazon Elastic Computing Cloud (Amazon EC2) R8g instances that were previously previewed at re:Invent 2023. AWS offers over 150 Amazon EC2 instance types powered by AWS Graviton globally and has built over 2 million Graviton processors, serving more than 50,000 customers. The AWS Graviton4 processor, based on a 64-bit Arm instruction set architecture, offers up to 30% better performance than its predecessor, AWS Graviton3.
Numerous customers, including Epic Games, SmugMug, Honeycomb, SAP, and ClickHouse, have tested their workloads on AWS Graviton4 R8g Instances and reported significant performance improvements. SmugMug saw a 20-40% performance boost for image and data compression operations, while Epic Games achieved its fastest EC2 instances yet. Honeycomb.io saw more than double the throughput per vCPU compared to non-Graviton-based instances it used four years ago.
The new R8g instances offer larger sizes with up to 3x more vCPUs, 3x more memory, improved memory bandwidth, and larger L2 cache compared to R7g instances. Additionally, R8g instances provide up to 50Gbps of network bandwidth and up to 40Gbps of EBS bandwidth. Customers can choose from various instance sizes and directly access physical resources for enhanced performance.
R8g instances are designed for energy-efficient computing, suitable for memory-intensive workloads on EC2. They are part of the AWS Nitro System, which enhances workload security and performance by offloading key functions from the CPU. These instances are well-suited for Linux-based workloads, including containerized applications built using popular languages like C/C++, Rust, Go, Java, Python, and more. AWS Graviton4 processors offer significant speed improvements for various applications compared to Graviton3 processors.
The R8g instances are now available in select AWS regions and can be purchased through various pricing options like Reserved Instances, On-Demand Instances, Spot Instances, and Savings Plans. Customers interested in migrating their applications to Graviton instance types can access resources and guides provided by AWS. For more information on Graviton-based instances, customers can visit the AWS Graviton Processors or Amazon EC2 R8g Instances webpages.
