Google has announced through I/O 2024 that the Gemini side panel, powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, is now being deployed to paid Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides customers, including Google One AI Premium users. Formerly known as Duet AI, the Gemini side panel offers various functions across different Google applications.

In Docs, the side panel can assist in writing and refining content, summarizing information, generating ideas, and creating content based on other files. In Slides, it helps in creating new slides, generating custom images, and summarizing presentations. For Sheets, the side panel aids in tracking and organizing data, creating tables, generating formulas, and answering queries related to using Sheets. In Drive, users can summarize documents, get quick project facts, and drill down into topics without extensive searching.

In Gmail, users can utilize the Gemini side panel to summarize email threads, suggest responses, get assistance in composing emails, and find specific information within emails or Drive files.

By clicking on the “Ask Gemini” glow next to the profile avatar on the web, users can access the support experience without switching tabs. Google provides suggested queries and automatically summarizes the content users are working on. This feature complements existing AI features like Help Me Write, Visualize, and Organize, which were launched earlier this year.

Initially released to Workspace laboratories and the Gemini program for Workspace Alpha in May, the side panel is now generally available and will be fully rolled out in the coming weeks for Google One AI Premium, Gemini Business and Enterprise Plugin, and Gemini Education and Education Premium Addon users.

Overall, the deployment of the Gemini side panel provides enhanced functionality and support for paid Google customers across various applications, showcasing Google’s continued efforts to integrate AI-powered tools into its suite of services.
