Gartner has released its 2024 Hype Cycle for data center infrastructure technologies, highlighting the emerging trend of devirtualization and revirtualization. Devirtualization, also known as physical-to-virtual migration, is seen as a potential solution for organizations facing increased costs with virtualization projects. However, there are concerns about the complexity and cost associated with operating bare-metal systems.
On the other hand, revirtualization, or virtual-to-virtual migration, has reached peak enthusiasm and is applicable to five to twenty percent of enterprises. The introduction of new hypervisors and licensing changes by VMware are driving forces behind this trend.
Other technologies on the rise in the hype cycle include new storage technologies such as MRAM and ReRAM, connecting digital twins for testing network changes, off-grid power supply for data centers, and augmented reality in the data center for real-time data visualization and maintenance processes.
On the flip side, technologies such as edge computing, infrastructure automation, and immersion cooling are declining according to Gartner. Circular economies in IT, net-zero data centers, consumption-based models, and direct-to-chip liquid cooling are considered to have reached their peak hype.
Overall, the report emphasizes the importance of exploring new technologies and trends in the data center industry to stay competitive and optimize operations. Technologies like devirtualization and revirtualization offer potential benefits but also come with challenges that organizations need to carefully consider before implementation.
