The acquisition of VMware by Broadcom has led to market changes, with Gartner predicting an increase in “devirtualization” in the future. Many companies are considering switching to VMware alternatives, but this may not be feasible for most organizations for several years.

Gartner’s Hype Cycle 2024 for Data Center Infrastructure Technologies estimates that VMware‘s pricing may double or triple. However, some companies have already experienced significant price hikes, such as Scale Computing, a VMware alternative, which has seen a surge in demand since Broadcom’s price increase.

Broadcom’s consolidation of VMware components into VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware vSphere Foundation has led to price increases. This has impacted VMware customers, who can no longer choose perpetual licenses or just the ESXi hypervisor.

Gartner suggests two options for organizations due to VMware‘s changing policy. The first option is devirtualization, which involves reverting to bare metal infrastructure with increased costs and complexities. The other option is to switch to alternatives like Nutanix or Scale Computing, while maintaining some continuity in the existing IT infrastructure.

Gartner believes devirtualization will be a slow process, with only 1 percent of organizations able to make the switch now. Others may have to wait five to ten years for the migration path to mature. On the other hand, 5 to 20 percent of organizations could already move to a new hypervisor or alternative solutions.

Overall, the changes in the VMware market due to the acquisition by Broadcom are leading companies to reevaluate their IT strategies and consider alternatives to VMware. The future may see more organizations moving towards devirtualization or switching to new hypervisors to adapt to the evolving landscape of data center infrastructure technologies.
