The FTC and DOJ have agreed to split roles in investigating potential antitrust violations by Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia, according to a report by The New York Times. The Justice Department will lead the investigation into Nvidia, while the FTC will examine the deal between OpenAI and Microsoft, its largest investor. The FTC began investigating antitrust issues related to technology companies’ investments in smaller AI companies in January, sending letters to Alphabet, Amazon, Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Alphabet and Amazon are investors in Anthropic. Microsoft and Nvidia did not respond to requests for comment, and both agencies declined to comment on the investigation. It is noted that a similar agreement in 2019 led to antitrust cases against Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook. The Department of Justice and OpenAI also declined to comment on the investigation.
